The International Encounters of Practitioners in Mediterranean Agrosilvopastoralism will be held from Tuesday 17th to Friday 20th October 2017 in Montpellier and Florac (France).

These International Encounters are an important occasion for exchanges on key issues for pastoralism at both the French and the Mediterranean scales. They bring together in one event, two cross-cutting experiences:

  • the closing seminar of the European LIFE + project: MIL’OUV, on the maintenance of open pastoral landscapes
  • the 5th thematic meeting of experts on Mediterranean agro-pastoral Cultural Landscapes based on the management experience of the Causses and Cévennes zone.

This international event will be an opportunity to broaden the discussions to common topics such as markets and value chains, public policies, environmental changes, knowledge transfer or territorial dynamics in favor of agrosilvopastoralism.

It will allow all participants to discover the UNESCO Cultural Property The Causses and the Cévennes, an area emblematic for its Mediterranean agro-pastoral cultural landscape.

The Causses and the Cévennes

The Causses and the Cévennes

A territory of innovation for the Mediterranean agrosilvopastoralism

In the southern part of central France, the UNESCO Property The Causses and the Cévennes covers more than 300,000 ha. It touches four départements, two regions, a National Park (Cévennes National Park), a Regional Park (Grands Causses Regional Park), and several “Grands sites“.

The Causses and the Cévennes property is thus an area of innovation for agro-ecology strategies in which reflection and action are combined to achieve sustainable development seeking to preserve both natural and cultural heritages.

In a complementary manner, The Causses and the Cévennes is also an observatory for managers of other existing or potential UNESCO properties or similar territories with a strong cultural heritage dimension. It provides concrete examples and situations in which actors use their “heritage” as a preservation and development tool. Agrosilvopastoral activities are at the heart of these issues.

The Causses and the Cévennes registered on the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
